The Spanish title race was thrown wide open on Sunday after Real Madrid slipped to a dramatic 3-2 defeat at home to Valencia while Barcelona overcame a nervous spell to beat Valladolid 4-1 at the Nou Camp.

Madrid have now lost five of their last eight league games, and Raúl Gonzales–who scored twice against Valencia–-knows they will have to raise their game if they are to retain the title.

“The difference between us and Barcelona is four points now and we can’t allow it to be less than that,” he said. “We’re still in a good situation but the nine games ahead are nine finals so it’s the moment of truth.”

Real remain top on 62 points with nine matches left to play, but are now only four ahead of Barca and six clear of third-placed Villarreal who won 2-1 at basement side Levante.

Raul and Valencia striker David Villa scored two goals apiece in a frenetic encounter at the Bernabeu, but it was former Atletico Madrid forward Angel Arizmendi who stole the headlines with his 89th-minute winner.

Bojan Krkic was the architect of Barcelona’s win over Valladolid, the 17-year-old supplied an assist for Samuel Eto’o’s opener and the struck twice himself in the second half to help the Catalans to a morale-boosting victory.

“We can win it all. We can lift the title and the Champions League because while there is life, there is still hope,” Barca’s striker Samuel Eto’o exclaimed.

Baca was the only Spanish side through to Champions League quater finals.
