Internazionale scored an 89th-minute equalizer to deny 10-man Roma a crucial victory on Wednesday to make a 1-1 draw and maintain their comfortable lead at the top of Serie A.
Francesco Totti rediscovered his scoring touch to fire Roma into a 38th-minute lead and he looked to have blown the title race wide open until Javier Zanetti salvaged a late point for the league leaders.
Roma, who had France defender Philippe Mexes sent off in the 85th minute, remain nine points adrift of Inter with 13 games to go in the Scudetto race.
“It’s a draw that’s worth a victory for the way it was earnt,” told Inter’s coach Roberto Mancini. “Totti scored with their first chance on goal and then that shaped the course of the match. It was very difficult for us with 10 men.”
Roma coach Luciano Spalletti was livid with the sending off of Mexes, whose second booking looked ridiculously harsh.
“It was unfair because the (Mexes’s) second booking wasn’t deserved. Did that turn the game? Well, a goal followed on from it,” he said.
Fiorentina bounced back immediately from their defeat to Roma with a 1-0 victory over Tuscan rivals Livorno.
The Viola reclaimed fourth place from AC Milan. Milan could only manage a 1-1 draw at struggling Catania.
Milan went ahead after 56 minutes through young Brazilian striker Alexandre Pato but Gionatha Spinesi equalized for the home side eight minutes later.
