Liverpool scored twice in the final six minutes to defeat visiting Internazionale of Milan 2-0 Tuesday night in the second round of the European Champions League.

AS Roma and Schalke also won first-leg matches at home.

Dirk Kuyt scored in the 85th minute and Steven Gerrard added a goal in the 90th for Liverpool, which is just fifth in the English Premier League and was eliminated from the FA Cup last weekend by Barnsley, a 14th-place team in the League Championship.

Inter played the final 60 minutes a man short after Marco Materazzi was ejected for receiving his second yellow card—both for fouls of Fernando Torres. During the 2006 World Cup, Materazzi drew the head butt that led to the ejection of France’s Zinedene Zidane, and Italy went on to win on penalty kicks.

In other games, AS Roma rallied to beat Real Madrid 2-1, Schalke defeated Porto 1-0 and Chelsea tied 0-0 at Olympiakos.

At Anfield, substitute Jermaine Pennant set up both goals.

“We’re not going to get carried away,” Gerrard said. “They were playing for 0-0 so it was important that we were patient. We kept working them, and in the last 10 minutes we got our rewards because they were very tired.”

At Rome, Raul Gonzalez scored in the eighth minute, his 60th Champions League goal. Roma rallied when on goals by David Pizarro in the 24th and Amantini Mancini in the 58th, the latter off a pass from Francesco Totti.

At Gelsenkirchen, Kevin Kuranyi scored in the fourth minute for Schalke.
