Spanish league champion Real Madrid could find no way past Real Mallorca goalkeeper Miguel Moya and conceded a late goal to lose 1-0 and be eliminated from the Copa del Rey on Wednesday.
Real Madrid, already facing a 2-1 deficit from the first leg, lost 3-1 on aggregate. It hasn’t won the Copa del Rey since 1993.
Argentine midfielder Ariel Ibagaza scored the only goal seven minutes from time at the Santiago Bernabeu, controlling a long freekick in the area and lobbing Jerzy Dudek to seal his side’s passage.
Real dominated the match but missed a host of chances after starting with a second-string side.
The introduction of Ruud van Nistelrooy and Robinho in the second half failed to improve their luck and an inspired Miguel Angel Moya in the visitors’ goal kept them at bay.
Mallorca advanced to the quarterfinals along with Getafe, Atletico Madrid, Valencia, Racing Santander, Villarreal and Athletic Bilbao. On Tuesday, FC Barcelona drew 0-0 with defending champion Sevilla to advance on away goals.
In the quarterfinals it will be Mallorca vs Getafe, Atletico vs Valencia, Santander vs Athletic Bilbao, and Barcelona vs Villarreal.
