Liverpool clinched an unlikely place in the next round of the Champions League alongside Real Madrid, FC Porto, Olympiakos and Schalke on Tuesday.
Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Dirk Kuyt scored to give Liverpool a 4-0 victory over Marseille in its final group game, seven weeks after the five-time European champions looked to be on the verge of elimination.
Coach Rafael Benitez described Liverpool’s demolition of Marseille as “almost perfect.”
Lucho Gonzalez and Ricardo Quaresma scored a goal each Tuesday to help FC Porto beat Besiktas 2-0 and finish first in Group A.
Robinho scored one goal and set up two more Tuesday to lead Real Madrid over Lazio 3-1 and into first place in Group C of the Champions League.
Robinho fed Julio Baptista for the first goal in the 13th minute, and Raul Gonzalez headed in the Brazilian’s cross two minutes later.
Ieroklis Stoltidis scored two goals and set up another to send Olympiakos to the second round after beating Werder Bremen 3-0.
Schalke beat Rosenborg 3-1 to advance behind Chelsea, which had already qualified.
Chelsea’s unbeaten home run reached the half-century mark on Tuesday when they drew 0-0 with Valencia. The landmark, 50 games at Stamford Bridge in all competitions since February 2006.
