Sir Alex Ferguson was sent to the stands as his title-chasing Manchester United side crashed to their first defeat since August via a 1-0 loss at Bolton.

Ferguson was unhappy at Bolton Wanderers’s physical approach and got into a row with referee Mark Clattenburg.

United fell behind to Nicolas Anelka’s eighth goal of the season in the first-half and missed a host of chances before slumping to their first league loss in over three months.

Anelka was a man that Ferguson has tried to buy himself on several occasions,

Arsenal moved three points clear with a game in hand after they beat Wigan Athletic 2-0 with two late goals. Arsenal now have 33 points from 13 games although they do have three consecutive away trips.

Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard, like most other England players in action, was booed but had the last laugh at woeful Newcastle United where he inspired a 3-0 win. Liverpool remained fifth.

Manchester City are still third after a late goal from Stephen Ireland defeated Reading 2-1 and fourth-placed Chelsea were 2-0 winners at bottom club Derby County.
