Chelsea’s first game since the departure of manager Jose Mourinho ended with loses 0-2 to Manchester United on Sunday.
Carlos Tevez scored his first goal for United in first-half injury time and Louis Saha hit a late penalty to extend Chelsea’s winless streak to four games in all competitions and hand Avram Grant a defeat in his first game in charge.
United’s fourth win lifted it to 14 points, two less than leader Arsenal, which routed Derby 5-0 on Saturday to maintain its unbeaten start to the season.
Juventus needed a late goal from Vincenzo Iaquinta to earn a 2-2 tie at AS Roma in the Italian league.
Iaquinta headed in Giorgio Chiellini’s cross in the 87th minute, but that was after Francesco Totti had scored twice in seven minutes to put AS Roma. David Trezeguet headed in Juve’s first goal in the 17th, his 100th in Italy’s top division.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored two goals in a game for the second time this season, helping 10-man Inter Milan earn a 2-2 tie at last-place Livorno.
Real Madrid stayed in first place on La Liga despite being held to a 1-1 tie at Valladolid.
Javier Saviola tapped in Madrid’s tying goal in the 87th, 15 minutes after Pedro Lopez scored for the hosts with a hard shot from 40 yards.
Valencia and Villarreal closed to within a point as they both won, and Barcelona are two behind Real in fourth after Lionel Messi inspired them to a 2-1 win over Sevilla on Saturday.
