Should Fergie Recalled Van Nistelrooy?

Manchester United badly needs a big target up front, especially with Wayne Rooney sidelined with a hairline fracture of his left foot.

Starting defense of its Premier League title against Reading on Sunday, United tried to thread passes through the Royals’ organized defense but rarely threatened goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann and had to settle for a scoreless draw.

And what Alex Ferguson did? He included John O’Shea. Come on, he isn’t the answer.

Admit it, he’s a leftback.

Even when Carlos Tevez and Nani join the starting lineup on a regular basis and Louis Saha and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are fit again, they just won’t be what the Reds badly need if they are to be a complete team.

Maybe Sir Alex must wish he still have Ruud van Nistelrooy.

He scored more than 150 goals for United. The striker moved on to Real Madrid, where he helped the Spanish club capture the domestic league title last season.

Having won his ninth Premier League title during his 20-year spell at Old Trafford, Ferguson knows what he’s doing.

But maybe United needs just one more piece of the jigsaw.

Imagine adding Van Nistelrooy to a strike force alongside Rooney and Tevez, with Ronaldo and Giggs supporting from the flanks and Scholes operating behind them.

Ferguson still has two weeks to do it.
